Multnomah Aikikai October 6, 2023

Thinking of starting aikido practice?

We’re offering two promotions to encourage you to start your practice in October or November.

"Fall For Aikido" Series - October 2023

This adult aikido class series starts Wednesday, Oct. 11 and runs through Oct. 28. Attend one, two or all three classes each week over the period of the series:

- Saturdays at 10:30am, taught by Suzane Van Amburgh Sensei, Chief Instructor
- Mondays at 6pm, taught by Sean Sheedy Sensei
- Wednesdays at 6pm, taught by Jon-Paul Oliva Sensei

The price for the series is a flat fee of $97. When you sign up for this series we waive the usual $50 registration fee. At the conclusion of the series, students will have the option of joining as a Regular Member or continuing their exploration with our “New Student 3-month Intro” which runs Nov. 1 - Jan. 31 (see details below).

Note: This offer for adult and teen students new to aikido. New students are required to show their COVID-19 vaccination card to the Chief Instructor.

New Student 3-month Introduction to Aikido: Nov. 2023 - Jan. 2024

Sign up for our “New Student 3-month Introduction to Aikido” and practice November 1 - January 31. This offer is priced as a one-time payment of $297. The new member registration fee is waived (a $50 savings) and your new uniform (gi) is complementary (a $55 savings). Open to new adult students.

Attend one, two, or all three classes each week over the 12-week course offering:

- Saturdays at 10:30am, taught by Suzane Van Amburgh Sensei, Chief Instructor
- Mondays at 6pm, taught by Sean Sheedy Sensei
- Wednesdays at 6pm, taught by Jon-Paul Oliva Sensei

Syllabus:
Open to beginners, and new students with prior martial arts experience. This course offering will allow each student the time and experience necessary to build a sense of confidence with the basics of balance, safety, falling techniques, and rolls. Classes include beginners and more experienced students, all practicing together. Practice will focus on 1) how to affect our partner’s balance while managing our own bodily integrity and 2) learning how to safely apply a number of fundamental aikido techniques including throws and pins.

Our dojo recognizes the importance of allowing each person to learn at their own pace. The 12-week format for this course will allow you to build the trust and confidence necessary to challenge yourself in a safe environment while having fun with learning a new skill! You will receive individualized attention from an instructor and find an accepting and respectful environment on and off the mat. To get the most out of this course we recommend that you do your best to attend two of the three classes offered per week.

Sign-up by Oct. 31st, and start your practice in November. Continue through January 31, 2024. New students are required to show their COVID-19 vaccination card to the Chief Instructor, provide a valid email address, and pay through our digital portal. Note, this special introduction to aikido does not include weapons classes. Students are eligible to attend the three classes noted above on a weekly basis. Occasionally individual class dates may be cancelled due to holidays or inclement weather. In your first week we will help you determine your correct gi size. Orders take 1-2 weeks to arrive.

“My experience has been great. I didn’t know what to expect but I’m really having fun. All the instructors and students strike the perfect balance of being kind but firm. They want me to learn the techniques the right way so I don’t get injured, but they deliver the instruction with a smile.”

- Ryan F.

Apr 7, 2025

What I wish I knew when I started aikido… by Dennis Velasquez: I found myself reflecting on what I wish I had known when I first stepped onto the mat. What would have helped me feel more at ease? What might have made those early days a little less confusing and a lot more encouraging? Here’s what I came up with; advice and insights I’d share with anyone who’s just beginning, or even thinking about beginning, their journey in Aikido.
